  1. I am in the swimming pool industry and have a customer who wants to replace his vinyl pool with a gunite pool. I have always heard that to do this you must dig larger than the pool so it is in stable soil. However, the customers wants a different design. The builder has approved construction because only 12' of the pool wall will be unsettled soil. Do you think this will cause problems down the road? Our soil is prone to movement. Please help! - Randy from Murphy, TX

Hi Randy, You can build a pool that is freestanding with the proper engineering. When you gunite the pool make sure that you use button board to shore up the sides so that you can reduce the amount of the amount of gunite you use. The type of engineering will depend of the type of soil you are dealing with. The best way to build a freestanding wall is to install a double curtain wall of steel. After gunite you will need to backfilling the area useing crushed rock and sand. Compact the soil with a viberplate. Highly expansive soil requires additional alternates thoughout the cove of the pool. I would contact an engineer in your area to establish the best steel schedule for your project. 2. I have a fairly large yard, with literally no landscaping. We are thinking about a pool, and as far as pool design-I just need something fairly basic, but I'm more concerned about the landscaping design around the pool/yard? Do you also provide landscape design or do you work with another contractor? As far a timing, 45 days is for the pool to be built, but if I was to do a 1 acre yard, pool, and fence around the pool (do you do that)how far out would I need to commit so I could have it in time for summer? - Linda from Loomis, CA
